Subject of study & employment market prospects
The Master's programme in Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam is an advanced-level programme in Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. The programme is open to students with a Dutch Bachelor's degree in Communication Science and, under certain conditions, students with a Bachelor's degree in Communication Sience from non-Dutch universities or a Bachelor's degree in a related discipline from Dutch or non-Dutch universities.
Communication Science is an academic discipline within the social and behavioral sciences. The discipline focuses on the academic - theoretical and empirical- study of the production, contents, meanings and effects of media communication for individuals, organizations and societies.
A Master's degree in Communication Science equips students with an advanced-level academic education. The knowledge and skills acquired during the course provide an effective basis for positions in communication research (for example, media researcher, market and opinion researcher), communication advice (for example, policy worker in broadcasting or publishing, public information expert, advertising or PR consultant, communication consultant) or management (for example, publisher, programme director, research agency). Students may also want to pursue an academic career through continuing their studies in a PhD programme.
Full-time study programme
For the Master's programme in Communication Science, only full-time registration is possible. Full-time students complete 60 ECTS per year, while the Master's programme lasts for one year.
Free educational programme
The curriculum described in this course manual is the teaching programme as determined in the education and examination regulations (OER) for the degree programme. In accordance with Article 7.3c of the Higher Education and Research Act (WHW), it is alo possible to compose a free educational programme from the course components offered at the UvA.
