Leerdoelen
Insight in the aims, methods and recent results in the field of linguistics and its position in the field of cognitive science.
Inhoud
In this course a number of topics that are currently subject to linguistic debate will be introduced and discussed. Such topics may include discussions as to whether every natural language exhibits recursion, discussions about the autonomy of language as a cognitive function or discussions about the role of economy in natural language. Also, some time will be spent on how these current ideas are grounded in the linguistic tradition of the past 50 years. The philosophy behind this course is that by studying these discussions in detail, the student will not only achieve more insight in some current notions in the study of linguistics and cognitive science, but also achieve some basic knowledge of the basics of linguistic theory in general and the way it has been shaped.
