Inhoud

The course aims at an understanding of modern Western sexuality as the historical outcome of co-current, changing and competing discourses. The classic texts of Plato, Marquis de Sade, Sigmund Freud and Michel Foucault are the centre-pieces of this course and will serve as basic texts for this class. In close readings an discussions these studies will be understood as central texts that have defined secular Western sexuality. In the lectures, the writers and their theories will be placed in their historical context and attention will be given to various related topics such as gender, ethnicity, politics, art and variations of gender and sexuality.
