Leerdoelen
The course aims to teach the students to:
- understand and discuss various sexualities in their abstract meanings, concrete realities and social contexts, including “perversions”;
- acquire basic insights into historical and social context of sexual behavior;
- be able to evaluate historical and contemporary sexual source materials;
- have an overview of social theories of sexuality;
- understand various perspectives on sexual politics and ways in which power and knowledge affect different social groups;
- be able to use concepts such as intimate or sexual citizenship;
- see the sexual connections between private lives, local cultures and global developments;
- be sensitive to the interconnections between sexuality and gender, race, age, class and space.
Inhoud
The course aims at an understanding of modern Western sexuality as the historical outcome of co-current, changing and competing discourses. The classic texts of Plato, Marquis de Sade, Sigmund Freud and Michel Foucault are the centre-pieces of this course and will serve as basic texts for this class. In close readings an discussions these studies will be understood as central texts that have defined secular Western sexuality. In the lectures, the writers and their theories will be placed in their historical context and attention will be given to various related topics such as gender, ethnicity, politics, art and variations of gender and sexuality.

Preferably one other course in the field of gender and/or sexual studies.
