The study programme takes two academic years (120 EC), which awards a Master of Science degree in Artificial Intelligence.
The website of the MSc Artificial Intelligence:

There you'll find all announcements and contact information for MSc AI-students, like regulations, timetables, etc.
The MSc AI follows the ECTS, the European Credit Transfer System. 60 credits (EC) per year is considered to be a normal course load. This is equivalent to about 40 hours (28 hours per EC) per week and includes lectures, reading, assignments, library queries, and discussions. An academic year is divided in two semesters. Each semester is divided in three periods of respectively 8, 8, and 4 weeks (semester 1: block 1, 2 and 3; semester 2: block 1, 2 and 3). Students can start the study programme in semester 1 (September) or in semester 2 (February).
The Education and Examinations Regulations (in Dutch: Onderwijs- en Examenregeling - OER), ratified by the dean of the faculty, contains the official description of the programme. The student handbook and the Regulations are the documents by which students are granted their rights and duties. This study guide contains all kind of information regarding programmes and teaching matters, part of it being derived from the Regulations. Although the study guide has been compiled with great care no rights can be derived from it.
Content and study Load of the Components
The MSc Artificial Intelligence has five tracks:
- Gaming
- Intelligent Systems
- Learning Systems
- Natural Language Processing and Learning
- Web Information Processing
Majors:
- Students may choose from two majors: the major Management, Policy Analysis & Entrepreneurship and the major Science Communication.
- The majors Management, Policy Analysis & Entrepreneurship and Science Communication each have a study load of 60 EC.
- In the case of both majors, students must have completed the study programme of the first year of the disciplinary Master’s programme to be allowed to start the programme of the majors.
The MSc AI programme starts with a half year (1 semester) of core AI courses (30 EC). This core curriculum is mandatory for all MSc AI students. Then, a number of mandatory track courses are required (18 EC) followed by constrained AI and free choice courses. The MSc Artificial Intelligence has the following structure:
- Obligatory courses: 30 EC
- Track courses: 18 EC
- AI courses (including other track courses): 18 EC
- Free Choice courses*: 12 EC (electives)
- Master Thesis: 42 EC
* The track coordinator may decide to point out which courses -with a maximum of 6 EC- to take in order to alleviate deficiencies. The elective subjects require consent of the Board of Examiners.
The programme of the majors consists of:
- Master AI courses: 60 EC
- Major: 60 EC
