Objectives
Students who have passed this course are able to study documents pertaining to the history of music theory independently, They know how to use them, and how to arouse an interest in them.
Contents
The course is not so much about the history of music theory itself, as about the ways in which this history has been represented in the literature. The field of study is explored on the basis of selected writings. Additionally, students will write an contextualizing essay about a theoretical treatise of their own choice. Performing students are encouraged to choose a textbook or teaching manual relating to their instrument.
Recommended prior knowledge
Excellent reading, listening and speaking skills in English. A passive command of German and French.
