Objectives
At the end of this course, students master the following subjects:
- theory of estimation and hypothesis testing at intermediate level;
- statistical analysis into the form of population distribution;
- statistical inference and interpretation of SPSS output with respect to independent and matched pairs situations and the difference between two populations (both parametric and nonparametric);
- the relationship between variables (regression techniques);
- the translation of a formulated problem into a statistical (multiple) regression model;
- how to carry out the accompanying analysis;
- the interpretation of SPSS output of the analysis in the light of the statistical theory and formulated problem;
- misspecification tests for regression models.
Contents
- the above subjects will be taught during six weeks through twelve lectures of two hours each;
- by means of the notes, the syllabi and the textbook students are asked to prepare a collection of exercises before each of the weekly tutorials. These exercises test the proper understanding and application of all relevant concepts;
- during the tutorials the exercises are discussed in detail with special attention to choosing the proper analysis method;
- during the tutorials additional exercises can be made available, which will be studied in class.

Assessment
- the final grade will be determined by the midterm exam (30%) and the end of term (70%);
- the midterm (two hours) in week 4, which counts for 30%, will consist of 25 multiple-choice questions. A grade for the midterm only counts in combination with the end of term following on the midterm;
- the end of term, which counts for 70%, will be a 2½ -hour written examination consisting of open questions;
- during a resit, the full course material will be tested, and the results obtained for the midterm will be disregarded;
