Academic calender and enrollment for courses
Enrollment is compulsory for all courses. You have to enroll via 'Studieweb':
http://studieweb.student.uva.nl. If you do not enroll, you may not take part. Please take notice of the deadlines as presented in the Academic Calender below. When you are enrolled for a course, you are automatically enrolled for the first exam (directly following the tuition period) and for the first resit (just in case).
The timetables for exams and resits are to be announced by the Education Office (and will be published on the Internet). Any changes in the procedure will be announced by e-mail.

Semesters
The classes are given in two terms (
semesters), each semester being divided into three periods: 2x 8 weeks and 1x four weeks. At the end of each period there are examinations (1 week), except for the period of four weeks. In that period the tests are scheduled in consultation with the students.
The periods are referred to with "a" (1st period, eight weeks), "b" (2nd period, eight weeks) and "c" (3rd period, four weeks). Some subjects are given in more than one period; in that case all letters of the periods concerned are shown.
Credits
The programmes follow the ECTS, the
European Credit Transfer System. 60 credits (EC) per year is considered to be a normal course load. This is equivalent to about 40 hours (28 hours per EC) per week and includes lectures, reading, assignments, library queries, and discussions. Each semester has 30 EC.
