Inhoud
Most metropolitan areas accommodate inhabitants who come from various countries and who speak many different languages. An interesting subject of investigation is how these areas deal with this phenomenon. Do they consider it to be a source of potential problems or do they try to profit from the available cultural and linguistic diversity? How do people coming from different backgrounds and speaking various language interact with each other? What kind of problems do citizens encounter who do not speak the national language? And in which way does the educational system take account of these problems? Issues like these are not only interesting from a linguistic point of view, but also from a historical, cultural, pedagogic, sociological and political perspective. The main focus of attention in this course will be on multilingualism. During the first half of the course various aspects of multilingualism will be explored, like (second) language acquisition, language contact, code switching, ‘street’ language and language change. Next the students will write a paper on a specific theme of their choice. The results of this paper will be presented in a colloquium.
