Study objectives
The Research Master in Communication Science offers a two-year master program in Communication Science. The program has been developed for motivated students who are interested in taking a two years master program in communication science research. The program mixes substantive courses with a thorough training in conducting research. The program qualifies for the many challenging theoretical research questions in the field of communication and media.
The curriculum aims to integrate courses that enhance methodological skills with courses that focus on substantive theory. At the end of the two-year curriculum a broad overview of the state-of-the-art of different substantive fields in communications science (such as advertising, health communication, corporate communication, political communication, media entertainment and popular culture), is provided and students should be sufficiently trained in the appropriate advanced research methods to be able to conduct high-quality academic research in those fields.
Students develop their research skills through course work but also 'hands on' by participating in one of the research projects conducted by their professors. These research projects are part of the research programme of the Amsterdam School of Communications Research (ASCoR). ASCoR is the largest research institute of its kind in Europe and is among the largest worldwide. The facilities of the research institute include a communication laboratory.
Graduates from UvA's communication science department have proved to have excellent job market opportunities. Media and communication are studied by publishers, broadcasting organizations, new media companies, government departments, major corporations, advertising and media agencies, public opinion and market research companies, PR agencies, political interest groups, and the like. The program also qualifies for (semi-) governmental research organizations such as the Social and Cultural Planning Office of the Netherlands (
Sociaal Cultureel Planbureau, SCP) and Statistics Netherlands (
Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek, CBS). Finally: research master graduates have an excellent starting position to conduct a Ph.D.
Full-time/part-time
This Master is only offered as a full-time programme. 30 Credits are to be obtained each semester, 60 credits in an academic year.
