Master's in Dutch Art
Introduction The MA-programme Dutch Art is a comprehensive one-year programme designed to equip the student with a full understanding of Netherlandish art as it has been approached, viewed and interpreted from the late Middle Ages to the present day. The aim of the programme is to provide the student with a theoretical knowledge and understanding of Dutch art history and to build practical methodological skills essential to conducting art historical research. Equal emphasis, however, will be placed upon the direct 'hands-on' observation of artworks that underlies art historical theory. Museum study excursions are therefore vital to the study programme and students are encouraged to participate in both group and individual projects. Students are required to pursue a working knowledge of the Dutch language and to acquire basic translation skills from the onset of the study. Facilities for acquiring and improving competence in the Dutch language are available at the Faculty of Humanities of the Universiteit van Amsterdam. The programme Dutch Art comprises a general curriculum of 60 EC credits, including a Master's thesis of 18 EC.
